In order to increase competition and lower the cost of transport in the regions, the Union of municipalities of Quebec (UMQ) and the Alliance of the tourism industry in Quebec will meet with the air carriers, Porter and WestJet to Toronto and to Calgary tomorrow and Friday.

“We want to listen to Porter and WestJet and ask them why they are not present in Quebec,” said Alexandre Cusson, president of the UMQ and mayor of Drummondville, at the announcement of the mission this morning in Quebec city.

“We are in the era where everything goes fast and people need to move more quickly. The air transport is an economic engine (…). The rates are crazy. A ticket Gaspe-Montreal-Cuba is only $ 62 cheaper than the single ticket Gaspe-Montreal, ” says Daniel Côté, mayor of Gaspé and chairman of the committee on air transport of the UMQ.

The UMQ and the Alliance have met this morning the minister for Transport, Véronyque Tremblay, to discuss their mission and their problems. They believe that the regional airports will need $ 282 million investment over the next five years.
