OTTAWA | The government of Justin Trudeau has been criticized, on Wednesday, because it puts a lot of time to fill several important positions within the federal government.

The vacancies accumulate and many fear that it will eventually have consequences.

In particular, 20 months before the next federal election, Elections Canada still does not have an officer standing, a qualified situation inexplicable by a former CEO.

“We do not let a job like that vacant for so long. It is necessary that the decisions, which would ensure that the person who will be appointed as the risk of having the hands a little tied up,” said the ex-president from Elections Canada, Marc Mayrand.

Yet, Marc Mayrand, announced in June 2016 he will leave his post.

“It is very worrying for our democratic process because it is less than two years of elections. There is no captain to Elections Canada,” said NDP mp Alexandre Boulerice.

The minister of democratic Institutions, Karina Gould, acknowledges that time is of the essence. “It is for that that we are actively in the process and we seek the best person for this position. […] We made an exhaustive search,” she assured.

    Several agencies

There are a dozen federal agencies without a ruler standing, including atomic energy, the office of the information commissioner and Telefilm Canada. The commissioner of the RCMP has taken his retirement last June and he has still not been replaced.

“Honestly, I think that there is not a company in the private sector or an institutional organization in Canada that could run at this pace for the appointment of individuals,” explained the conservative mp Alain Rayes.

For the conservative member, Alain Rayes, it is inconceivable that so many organizations find themselves without leaders. According to him, no private company wouldn’t allow to spend as much time without big boss.

On the side of CBC/Radio-Canada, Hubert Lacroix remained in his post, even though its mandate ended on 31 December.

“It has created a new, independent process, referred to the minister of canadian Heritage, Mélanie Joly. The committee that, as a result of this process-there has asked us for more time.”

In recent times, the Trudeau government was also criticized for his slowness in filling judge positions. It also has a long delay before replacing the commissioners to the ethics and lobbying.
