The son of Denis Coderre must be punished for his fraud of $ 16,000 because of its cyberdépendance, but it should be able to receive absolution, believes the ex-mayor of Montreal.
“He deserves the consequences, but not a criminal record,” said Mr. Coderre, Monday at the palais de justice of Montreal.
The former politician, who introduced himself as ” unemployed, for the time being “, came to the defense of his son, 22-year-old Alexander, who is awaiting his sentence for fraud, mischief, and for having lied to police officers during a criminal investigation in 2016.
At the time, Alexandre Coderre suffered from cyberdépendance. He had made numerous purchases over the internet with credit cards, and then make believe that he was a fraud.
Denis Coderre, mayor of Montreal, was convinced that he had been the victim of identity theft and it has promptly notified the chief of police. An investigation has been opened and rather than admit the truth, Alexandre Coderre has persisted in his falsehood.
“It got out of control, I was afraid of the reactions of my family and the impact that it would have, because my father was mayor,” testified Alexandre Coderre on Monday.
The pot aux roses was, however, discovered, which has led to criminal charges.
Family support
Since the events, Alexandre Coderre has repaid part of the money defrauded, with the salary of his job in a grocery store. And as he wants to become a sports journalist, which often requires them to travel to the United States, his lawyer Conrad Lord argues that an absolute discharge and community work would be appropriate.
Denis Coderre was also said to have had a good discussion with her son, during the last election campaign.
“I’m not mayor, but father,” said Mr. Coderre to the court, adding that his son had ” really gone “.
A psychologist has confirmed all this, adding that Alexandre Coderre had ” no ” intention to re-offend.
But if the Crown is in agreement that the young Coderre performs community service work, Me Fannie Turcot is opposed to the absence of criminal records and to recommend a suspended sentence with probation.
The judge Sylvie Durand will make his decision in April.
