The University of Quebec in Rimouski provides an application for mobile devices to reach its students and its employees in case of an emergency. Barely launched, Security UQAR has been downloaded more than 600 times in less than 24 hours.

The application allows you to broadcast live messages notifying as much of the suspension of progress, a fire, an evacuation, or even the presence of a suspect individual, either on the campus of Rimouski, or that of Levis.

It must be said that the UQAR already uses all kinds of tools to reach its students and its employees. For example, its web site, social networks and emails. But with this new application, the concept of immediacy is of the utmost importance.

And that is the wish of the UQAR. Reach as many people as possible immediately in case of emergency and especially to be able to update in real time the evolution of an emergency situation.

“Our goal was to have a tool that could allow us to do real-time notifications from students that could be found in classrooms or elsewhere. For example, if we had an active shooter in the facility, you could inform students to remain confined to where they are,” explained Nadia Drapeau, director of services to buildings of the université du québec à rimouski

Applications of this type are used in some universities in quebec and in several us institutions. In total, the UQAR account 6800 students and some 750 faculty and staff in its two campuses.
