Archaeologists have discovered 60 thousand houses, roads, palaces, complex irrigation systems of the times of the Mayan civilization, reports Rus.Media. As reported by National Geographic, all these buildings have been for centuries buried beneath the jungle in the North of Guatemala.

In the study, researchers used a technique called LiDAR, which they were able to “remove” the thicket of trees from images, and discover the ruins of buildings of the ancient civilization, a system which proved to be much more complex and connected than previously thought.

“LiDAR images allowed us to understand that this entire region was a system of settlements, size and density of the population which has been largely underestimated,” said one of the researchers, Thomas Harrison.

Scientists have studied the region with an area of 2.1 thousand square kilometers on the territory of the biosphere reserve the Maya Biosphere Reserve, located in the Department of Peten in the North of Guatemala. The researchers emphasize that 1200 years ago the Mayan civilization was comparable to the civilizations of Ancient Greece and China.

According to scientists, in this region lived about 10-15 million people, many of whom were in the swampy lowlands, which were considered uninhabitable.
