In Hawaii, astronomers have filmed a rare form of lightning known as “gigantic jet”. Lightning formed about 80 kilometers above the ground and struck in the mountains of Mauna Kea, reports Rus.Media.

According to the staff of the local Observatory Gemini, zip this size have never been recorded on video.

It is noted that the lightning struck the mountain with a height of more than 4 km. So the lightning was, at least, 17 times bigger than Mauna Kea, the highest point in the Hawaiian archipelago.

The video also can be seen the trace of gravity waves in the mesosphere.

Gigantic jet is a cone-shaped pipe, which occurs in the upper atmosphere over the storm front. Usually these lightning originate at a height of about 40-60 kilometers above sea level.
