Candlemas is celebrated on 15 February (old style – 2 Feb).

This is a great feast in Orthodoxy. Its name is translated from the Church Slavonic language as “meeting”.

The Orthodox Church in this day, recalls a meeting in the temple of Jerusalem Simeon with the infant Jesus in the implementation of the rite of consecration to God.

Other names of the holiday: “Candlemas”, “Candlemas”, “Candlemas frost”, “gromnica”.
