QUEBEC – mayor Denis Coderre fears that his city employees to turn into “police of the burqa”, the result of the adoption, on Wednesday, of the act respecting the religious neutrality of the national Assembly.
This new legislative measure requires that all public services be given and received face to face.
“It’s not like no good sense. I don’t want our employees to become fonts of the burqas,” said the mayor of Montreal, during a press briefing on Thursday.
“It does not hold the road. I think not bad, but I’m not happy”, he added.
Mr. Coderre is also concerned that women whose face is veiled can be prohibited in public places, such as libraries or sports facilities.
The mayor of the metropolis of Quebec had already heard of his discontent on the issue, in August last, when he had known that cities and transit services would be subject to this law.
