It’s been months that Lactalis knew that there was a contamination from its plant in Craon with salmonella. The first contamination to the salmonella have in fact been seen last August. The information was revealed in le Canard Enchaîné of 3 January.
The company Lactalis Nutrition and Health would have spotted both times the presence of salmonella, August and November. The bacteria were present ” on the cleaning equipment and on the floor “. Nothing has been said as this is not required, legally, for this type of companies to report on the controls carried out in-house.

A transparency question

Asked by Allodocteur.fr the direction of communication of Lactalis has stated that the authorities have been informed about all these facts : “We’re in a very controlled and in a relation of total transparency “.
A transparency which had been questioned in December by a former producer of milk to Lactalis. Asked by Europe 1, it was thought that analyses internal had been carried out regularly and that Lactalis had to know for the contamination. But the strains of salmonella are not dangerous, it was thought that the management had ” squandered “.

An opacity that is a tradition

The French group Lactalis became the world leader in dairy products after a frenzy of acquisitions via a holding company domiciled in Belgium, in Ixelles. On the occasion of the crisis of the milk producers, Mediapart had recalled that the company is also characterized by a financial management particularly opaque.
Despite its turnover of 17 billion euros, Lactalis remains a family-owned company, not publicly traded, owned by the family Besnier through holding companies domiciled in Paris. On the other hand, Lactalis has the doctrine of not filing its annual accounts and prefer to pay the fine is ridiculous.

In total, 35 infants were infected, 16 were hospitalized. All are in good health today. The parquet de Paris opened an investigation. Complaints have been filed for ” involuntary injury “, “endanger the lives of others” and ” deception “.
