    The STATEMENT

Returning to the survey Light published by The Journal, the end of last week, concerning the English-speaking people who are considering leaving the province of Quebec, premier Philippe Couillard said on Monday that ” with the shortage of labour that we know, we can’t afford to lose Quebec.

Should we really be concerned about a possible departure of a few hundred, if not a few thousands of English-speaking Quebecers ?

    THE FACTS

Quebec does, however, have already a negative net interprovincial migration, with since the election of the government Couillard in 2014, more than 13 500 persons going to a different province each year, on average. It is approximately 4,000 Quebecers more than the annual average since 1995, according to the Institut de la statistique du Québec (ISQ).

However, points to the ISQ, the balance of migration total (including international immigration) is positive, so that there is an average of 29 800 new Quebec every year since 2014, without counting the thousands of non-permanent residents. Therefore, for possibly a few thousand departures of English-speaking Quebecers, so many newcomers, if not more, will come to take their place on the labour market.

Their native language may not be English, but hindi, mandarin or Romanian !
