Fatal Accident on highway 20: the half-masting of flags at MTQ

    QUEBEC | The ministry of Transport has decided to honour the memory of Stéphane Lebel, a worker died in an accident on interstate 20 last Friday night, putting to half-mast the flags of Quebec before two of its buildings.

    “The flag will be at half-mast until 3 march at the headquarters of the Ministry, in 700, boulevard René-Lévesque, in Québec city, as well as the services Centre of Anjou, in 9000, boulevard Louis-H.-La Fontaine, Montreal”, explained the MTQ in a press release Wednesday.

    Last Friday, the man, 44-year-old was mowed down while he was working on a construction site or on highway highway 20 west, Dorval, close to the junction with highway 520. The accident could have been caused by a motorist drunk at the wheel of his pick-up truck that reportedly crashed into a sport utility vehicle, hurling it to the workers.

    In addition to Stéphane Lebel, five workers were injured by being struck by the SUV, while two have suffered a nervous shock.

    The alleged responsible for this accident, Vincent Lemay, the father of a family of 38-year-old is facing charges in connection with this tragedy. He was released pending the result of his trial.

    “This tragedy reminds us of the painful way the importance, for the road users to be vigilant in the vicinity of the road works,” said the MTQ, by recalling that a law is currently under consideration to “ensure a better protection of signalmen required to direct traffic during the work.”
