The drink Four Loko, had already been the subject of a recall notice, last fall, because they contained ethyl alcohol rather than the alcohol produced from the fermentation of the malt. The company wished, however, to reduce the sugary drink with high alcohol content (11.9 per cent) on the shelves of retailers.
Gold, Phusion Projects announced, in a letter addressed to the minister for rehabilitation, youth protection, public health and healthy habits of life, of its intention “to suspend the re-marketing of Four Loko in Quebec, to a new order”.
This decision comes at a time when the group Geloso, which produces the drink FCKDUP, has announced that it is withdrawing this product from the market on Sunday.
In a press release, Phusion Projects has sent his condolences to the relatives of Athena Gervais. “This sad accident demonstrates the serious issues related to inappropriate consumption of alcohol such as abuse and consumption by minors,” said the american company, which supports wanting to “collaborate actively with the government authorities concerned in order to promote the responsible consumption of alcohol and to prevent the use in minors.”
In addition, Phusion Projects has made it clear that the drink Four Loko, unlike the drink FCKDUP, does not contain stimulants, either caffeine, guarana, or taurine.
The withdrawal of such alcoholic beverages comes at a time when many voices, including that of the prime minister Philippe Couillard on Tuesday, have been raised to apply to Health Canada to regulate this type of product.
