The wave of intense cold which strikes the province has forced Hydro-Québec to set partially in the road its thermal power plant in Bécancour, in the last few days.

The central TAG, located near Gentilly 2, worked for an hour on the 22 and 29 December in order to add approximately 100 megawatts of power on the network. Electricity demand in Quebec ranged between 36 000 megawatts and nearly 38,000 megawatts. The total power installed in the park of Hydro-Québec’s production is approximately 40 000 megawatts.

It is very rare that it is necessary to use this central booster built in the early 90’s. “The goal is to use the least often possible, says a spokesman for the Crown corporation. It is kept in reserve.”
