Of the provincial elected officials have also reacted to the comments of the mayor of Quebec city.
According to the minister of Justice, Stéphanie Vallée, the remarks of Mr. Labeaume are “part of the character. This being said, it is not our intention to change anything in the bill to ban covered faces in public space.”
For his part, the minister of public Safety Martin Coiteux has distanced himself from the mayor Labeaume. “He is responsible for his words and we don’t share all of his words”, he said.
Finally, the president of the treasury Board, Pierre Moreau, has invited all parties to express themselves. “When one becomes emotional, there is always a risk associated with it. Me, I think that if one wants to have a discussion in the public space, it is possible to do so.”
