Lac-Mégantic : federal funds will be paid to a bypass

OTTAWA | The federal government will commit financially to the realization of a bypass railway in Lac-Mégantic.

The minister of Transport, Marc Garneau, has informed the municipality of its intention to grant of funds for the project, has confirmed Karine Dubé, press attaché to the mayor of Lac-Mégantic.

In an interview published Monday morning by the “Journal de Québec”, the mayor Julie Morin was asked to get out by July, in time for the first five years of the tragedy, the confirmation that a bypass would be put in place.

The project is currently in the final stage of the feasibility study, which was funded half by the federal and provincial governments.

The office of the minister Garneau had said Monday that the federal government is working with the municipality and with the government of Quebec “to advance this important issue”, without specifying a timeline.

Many stakeholders are calling for a bypass since the derailment that have made 47 people in the city centre in July 2013.
