Students who have not validated their year is reassuring. They will not lose really a year of their life. Researchers from the university of Edinburgh (Scotland) have shown that the longevity is stimulated by the studies.

Among other results on the modifying factors of life expectancy, they have observed in Nature Communications that a year of study was equivalent to almost an extra year of life.

Genetics plays 25 %

These results, the researchers have obtained by analyzing the data from 25 studies conducted primarily in Europe, North America and Australia, and who gathered more than 600 000 people.

Their analysis focused on identifying the influence of certain genes related to longevity, and the impact of life-style on their expression. In fact, ” up to 25 % of the variability of the expectancy of human life could be determined by genetics “, remind researchers in their study.

Seven years less for the smoking

In addition to time spent in study, they have estimated the potential loss of life time caused by the life style. Thus, a packet of cigarettes consumed per day reduces the lifetime of 7 years. On the other hand, former smokers appear to be protected : the life expectancy of a smoker increases during the weaning period.

On the side of the power supply, each kilogram taken in an overweight person truncates its life of 2 months. In terms of body mass index, each point in addition to the decreases of 7 months.

Lung Cancer and coronary heart disease

If these elements are involved in life expectancy, it is that they also act on genes very impact. In particular, on those that promote lung cancer and coronary heart disease for smoking, and diabetes for food.

In addition to the impact of the mode of life, the meta-analysis allowed us to identify two genes that are highly involved in the life. One of them regulates the rate of cholesterol in the blood, and alterations of this gene may reduce it to eight months. The other, linked to the immune system, could save six months of life.
