This year, the oil companies used the hurricane Harvey in Texas to justify an increase in the price of gasoline a few hours before the start of a long weekend.

Stations-services, the consumers encountered by TVA Nouvelles rebel or resign themselves: “A true theft”, “$1.35 per/l, it is too much”, “It is a farce”, “It’s increasing all the time, I think”.

There has been an increase of about 9 cents to Montreal, 15 cents in Quebec city, 12 cents in Sherbrooke, 14 cents in Saguenay and 10 cents to Rimouski.

Same reaction, no matter where it is located in Quebec. But it is not always the reason.

“Is it always like that, on the eve of the holidays. We are still waiting,” said a consumer.

“I do not believe that, that world events affect the price of gas,” said another.

“I can tell you that the oil, when there is a long break that is coming up, I think they abuse a little bit,” said a driver.

    Harvey or the long weekend?

VAT News has posed the question to Normand Mousseau, a specialist in energy issues at the University of Montreal.

“Above all, it is Harvey, he believes. So, we have still approximately one quarter of the production of gasoline that the u.s. is made in the Houston area, and therefore is subjected to tension. Currently, a party does not.”

Annie Gauthier, CAA Quebec, advance another explanation: “In a second time, it is in a market which is increasing the demand for gasoline. Then, it is the end of summer vacation, a long weekend that begins”, she explains.

There are also consumers pragmatic : “I made enough just for me to go to Costco, because Costco is always cheaper,” says a man met him at the pump.

After checking the Costco in Anjou, in Montreal, the price of a gallon of regular gas was $ 1.20, or 15 cents less than what we could find a little bit everywhere in Montreal. It must be said that there are still many motorists here, because the price is generally lower than elsewhere, and so it is everywhere in Quebec. But today the situation is exceptional, we say the motorists.

It is therefore necessary, once again, to shop.
