Montreal: a fire suspected cause of heavy damage

MONTREAL – A fire caused heavy damage to a commercial building and residential building of three floors, in the night from Saturday to Sunday in the borough of Côte-des-Neiges in Montreal.
The fire occurred at about 3 a.m. in a building housing two businesses and four homes, located on the Chemin de la Côte-des-Neiges, near the avenue St-Kévin.
According to preliminary information, the blaze would have taken birth in a recycling bin at the rear of the building before spreading to the balconies.
“Some witnesses have reported seeing a suspect flee the scene at the time of the fire,” said Manuel Couture, spokesperson for the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM).
Several evacuations were necessary, approximately 40 dwellings, no-one was injured.
The damage, however, would be considerable.
An investigation has been opened by the Module of the arson of the SPVM.
