MONTREAL | The petition launched in mid-February in opposition to the closure to motor vehicles of track Camillien-Houde, which crosses the Mont-Royal, has collected up to now more than 23 000 signatures.

Elected representatives montreal, however, remain sceptical about the apparent success of this petition. This is the case of the mayor of the borough of Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grace, Sue Montgomery.

“Interesting. Many people who sign [the petition] are not of Montreal : Laval, Ile Perrot, Vaudreuil…”, responded the elect of projet Montréal on Twitter, last week.

Mrs. Montgomery had expressed reservations about the project. However, it has indicated to be reassured after a meeting with another elected official of his party, the mayor of the borough of Plateau-Mont-Royal, Luc Ferrandez.

Launched by the Group TO MONTREAL, the petition mentions that”to eradicate the car from the Mont-Royal is not the solution”. Rather, the Group proposes to reduce the permitted speed on the way Camillien-Houde, prohibit access to commercial vehicles or construction, installing speed bumps or even better draw a line between the bike lane used by cars.

A second petition, which supports the decision to close access to drivers at the track Camillien-Houde, has raised so far to just over 6000 signatures.

It is Luc Ferrandez, also responsible of the large parks in the City of Montreal, which had announced the closure of the voie Camillien-Houde to the motorists, on the 6th of February last. A cyclist of 18 years had lost their lives on this road, because of a half-turn made by a vehicle.
