LAVAL The City of Laval and the union of its blue-collar workers have switched to the mode of mediation after an approach of the municipal administration to the minister of Labour.

“By reason of the infringement of the statutory limit as to the duration of the negotiations and in accordance with the Act respecting the process of negotiation of the collective agreements and settlement of disputes in the municipal sector, the City of Laval passed on Friday the 21st July last, a notice relating to the absence of a collective agreement with blue-collar workers to the minister responsible for the application of the labour Code, Dominique Vien,” said the City in a press release Monday.

“This approach triggers the immediate appointment of a mediator whose role is to assist the parties in resolution of disputes with a view to the renewal of the collective agreement.”

The ombudsman has 60 days to attempt to obtain an agreement between the parties. The period is renewable, but only once.
