Agricultural producers consider inadmissible the request of the United States to abolish the management of the offer on milk, eggs, and poultry, a view which is not shared by economic experts.

“What was proposed in the U.s. is simply unacceptable, not just for producers but for all Canadians,” protested the general president of the Union des producteurs agricoles du Québec, Marcel Groleau.

Washington claims that Canada abandoned within 10 years, all of its protections to producers of milk, eggs and poultry, have informed the sources close to the renegotiation of the free trade Agreement north american (NAFTA).

Like many, Groleau believes that the Americans are trying to bring the discussion into a cul-de-sac to withdraw more easily from the Agreement.

    Logic

Yesterday, the ministers of Agriculture of Quebec and Canada have each renewed their support for the system that allows farmers to have a stable price for their products through quotas.

“Produce according to the demand of the consumers, it is logical. We must defend it, ” says François Dumontier, spokesman for the milk Producers of Quebec.

However, the Montreal economic Institute (MEI) believes that it would be advantageous to drop the management of the offer, provided that the United States abolish their own measures to support their dairy industry.

“This is an opportunity to create a market equal to all. But the government would not abandon farmers and will offer them compensation to assist them in making the transition, ” believes Alexander Moreau, analyst in public policy at the MEI.

For his part, Sylvain Charlebois believes it is ” high time to reform the outdated system of supply management “.

“It’s been 50 years that we have this system. Times have changed and now it is time to evolve. But we will have hard choices to make during these négos, ” says the professor, distribution and food policies of Dalhousie University.
