RIGAUD – The municipal authorities of Rigaud, one of the towns heavily affected by the spring flood of last year, were keen to reassure the population Monday as a warning of rain for the next few days has been issued by Environment Canada.
In a press release, the City notes that”due to a significant ice cover still present on the rivers in the vicinity of the City, the precipitation for the next few days should primarily have the effect of melt the snow”.
According to the information obtained by the City of Rigaud, the ministry of public Security, “the peak of runoff and its effects on the water courses will occur by 22nd February”.
“As the regional Organisation of civil security, the team of emergency measures of the City of Rigaud is mobilized to monitor the situation carefully, although it should not fear, for the moment, an overflow of the two major rivers (the Ottawa river and Rigaud)”, said the release of the municipal authorities.
The City adds that”as a precautionary measure, several patrols on the territory will be made in order to properly measure the impact of runoff on municipal infrastructure and water courses”.
According to Environment Canada, 25 mm of rain are expected in the area of Rigaud on Monday and Tuesday, while on Wednesday the precipitation will be intermittent. As to the temperatures, Environment Canada is predicting that the mercury will rise to a maximum of 13 degrees on Wednesday, falling back below zero on Thursday.
Last year, during the spring freshet that swept through several regions of Québec, approximately 280 requests for financial assistance for homes to be flooded had been submitted to the government by citizens of Rigaud.
