SAINT-ULRIC – A fire of peat bog has mobilized several teams of the Société de protection des forêts contre le feu (SOPFEU), Saturday, in Saint-Ulric, near Matane, in Bas-Saint-Laurent.
“When the fire erupted this afternoon, it could be threatening to the forest, so we immediately deployed teams air,” explained Isabelle Gariépy, agent for the prevention and the information of the SOPFEU, in an interview with LCN.
Six tankers of the SOPFEU, as well as a helicopter were used to attempt to extinguish the blaze, threatening, however no homes.
As the blaze is calm, usually during the night, the tankers have stopped their work to 20 h.
“What we plan to do, that is [Sunday] morning, around 7 a.m., sending other planes-tanks to attempt to control the fire and then send in our ground teams on site,” added the officer of the SOPFEU.
The Society for the protection of forests against fire is not known what the cause of the fire.
Fire hazards are high in the Bas-Saint-Laurent, and could be considered “extreme”, on Sunday, said Isabelle Gariépy.
According to the site of the SOPFEU, the fire of bog of Saint-Ulric threat about 7.9 hectares.
