A group of scientists from Johns Hopkins University in the US found beneath the surface of Mars a large amount of water in the form of ice, reports Rus.Media. This is the conclusion the researchers came after the re-analysis of data from the Orbiter Mars Odyssey. However, in the region, given the climate of the red planet, the existence of water is unlikely.

Since the Mars Odyssey probe is above the surface of Mars at an altitude of about four thousand kilometres, it cannot directly determine the amount of water in the soil. However, it registers the neutrons, which are formed by the collision of cosmic rays with hydrogen within the water. This allowed to detect ice on the red planet in 2002, but he was in the polar regions. Previously, scientists made a hypothesis that at the equator the ice would quickly evaporate.

With the help of new statistical methods that allowed us to reconstruct maps of abundance of water on the basis of the data of the device, found out that the ice is in the warmer regions of the world. Such unusual findings argue that the axis of Mars several million years ago, was tilted at a different angle, with the result that at the equator, has accumulated a large amount of ice.
