Even if the G7 Summit will be held in La Malbaie in June, most of the accredited journalists will be grouped together at the Centre des congrès de Québec (in the background). On the photo, RCMP officers were guarding the security of the premises during the Francophonie Summit in October 2008. He was held without major incidents.

Quebec City is confident that the safety of the G7 Summit will not cost him anything. Ottawa should logically assume the entirety of the bill, supports the municipal administration.
In recent years, two major international events were held in Quebec city Summit of the Americas (2001) and the Summit of the Francophonie (2008). Each time, the bill for the security has been shifted to the government of Canada or Québec.
In 2001, the municipal police services of Québec and Sainte-Foy (it was before the mergers), acting in support of the royal Canadian mounted police (RCMP) and the Sûreté du Québec (SQ). “An invoice of $ 2.8 million has been sent by the municipalities in Ottawa has reimbursed $ 2.7 million,” said David O’brien, a spokesman for the City. The bill was composed of the total costs inherent to the deployment of municipal police officers. It also included the reimbursement of facilities (sidewalks, streetlights, traffic lights, etc) broken during the protests, sometimes violent, of the time.
For the Francophonie Summit in 2008, the government of Quebec received 55 heads of State and government. Here again, the Québec police was in support of other police forces. For the City, the cost of security had been of nearly $ 1.3 million, refunded to 99.9% by the government of Quebec. The exact opposite of the events of 2001, no major incidents had been recorded in 2008.
“Always right to remember “
For weeks, mayor Régis Labeaume repeated that he works hard to ensure that you do not have to pay a portion of the invoice in connection with the safety of the G7. Should you understand that it is not acquired ? “We have no particular concerns over this, but it is always good to remember,” replied his press attaché, Paul-Christian Nolin.
The G7 Summit, which brings together the seven major leaders of the planet, will be held at La Malbaie, on 8 and 9 June. But most of the accredited journalists will be grouped together at the Centre des congrès de Québec. The protesters are mainly expected in the National Capital.
Up to$ 500 Million ?
In the last budget, in Canada, some $ 600 million are devoted to the organization of the G7.
Last month, TVA found that the only security for the event could reach $500 million.
The integrated security unit (RCMP, SQ, armed Forces, police, and Quebec police Saguenay) has not wanted to specify, yesterday, the security costs of the G7 or the number of police and military who will be deployed in the Charlevoix and Quebec city on this occasion.
Overall Budget for the security
- Summit of the Americas in Quebec (2001) : $75 million
- Summit of the Francophonie of Québec (2008) : $30 million
- G8 / G20 Toronto and Huntsville (2010) : 930 million $
