Despite the efforts and the fighting men and women are still not equal. Especially when it involves their health. A dedicated working group recalled in a review of the literature devoted to the STROKE.

The female sex is clearly at a disadvantage in the face of this pathology. The phenomenon is known, but remains largely ignored in the research work, complain to the authors in Nature Reviews Neurology.

The figures are enough to cause alarm. Stroke is the leading cause of death among women in the world. In France alone, more than 15,000 women die each year as a result of this incident. Because the research is repeated on a regular basis : the fair sex is disadvantaged in this area.

Diabetes and high blood pressure

Then, how to improve prevention ? This is the question that is posed by the working group at the origin of this publication. Its members have realized a state of the art in support of the STROKE female in the world. And the balance sheet isn’t up to par. The risk factors of stroke are well known. Among them, diabetes or high blood pressure.

First problem : these conditions tend to be less in touch with the men. But the imbalance does not stop there. What is less known is that these pathologies have a weight far more important within the female population. In the presence of an atrial fibrillation, for example, the risk of STROKE is doubled in women.

These risk factors overall are in addition to those inherent to the feminine condition. The working group distinguishes three key periods. The reproductive age is often associated with the hormonal contraception, which slightly increases the incident risk of a thrombotic event.
