The ministry of the Environment of Quebec will “investigate the possibility” to appeal the judgment on Friday concerning the aerodrome of Mascouche, has confirmed to the Newspaper the cabinet of the minister Isabelle Melançon Monday night.

The construction of the new airport can be resumed, as the judge of the superior Court Marc Castonguay has estimated that the Law on the quality of the environment was “constitutionally unenforceable” because an airport project is under federal jurisdiction.

The City of Mascouche had applied for and obtained in December 2016 for an injunction to stop the work because it considered that the project violated the environmental laws of québec.

“Quebec must be able to apply its environmental assessment procedure to all projects located on its territory, including those for which the federal government has a responsibility “, argued the minister’s office by e-mail.

    The CAQ reacts

Earlier Monday, the Coalition avenir Quebec has estimated that the decision of the judge Castonguay was “to create a dangerous precedent in environmental matters”.

The spokesperson in the environment of the CAQ and member of parliament for Masson, Mathieu Lemay, has called on the Environment minister to bring the decision of the court of appeal.

“Our laws must be respected, supported the mp in a press release. It is possible to combine economic development with the respect of Quebec’s jurisdiction in environmental matters”.
