The debate is heated. The e-cigarette encourages the youngsters to take the step of smoking ? Is there a “front door” ? In England, where the authorities have opted for a policy in favour of vapoteuse as the subject of risk reduction, a new study raise this question.
Conducted on more than 60 000 people aged 11 to 16 years, with the collaboration of the agency Public Health England, the work was intended to determine if the youth vapor turned into teenagers smoking.

The answer is negative, explain the researchers, who deemed unfounded the fears expressed about a possible effect of communicating vessels. The work, published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, were carried out from five cohorts in the United Kingdom.

Little vaping regular youth

They show, first, that vaping is not very common within this age group : if 10% to 20% of 11-16 year-olds have already experienced the e-cigarette, only 3 % use it regularly. In addition, among youth who have never smoked tobacco, the use of the e-cigarette is very limited, between 0.1 % and 0.5 %.

“This characteristic was constant in the different studies across the United Kingdom and suggests that, up to now, the experimentation of the e-cigarette does not necessarily use on a regular basis, especially for those who have never smoked tobacco,” the authors write.

The vapor regular were over-represented among young people who smoked cigarettes also tobacco, while young people who have never experienced the tobacco seemed not to be seduced by e-cigarettes, say the researchers. This suggests that the e-cigarette is rather concomitant with a consumption of tobacco, it can also decrease. On the other hand, it does not induce an effect gateway for those who have never smoked, and that, in fact, do not take over this object.

The work also showed that the prevalence of smoking among young people continues to decrease. Other studies will be conducted to assess the consumption rates of tobacco and e-cigarette among young people, as well as the interactions between these two drinks. But according to the authors, these results show that the risk reduction policy conducted by the authorities vis-à-vis the vapoteuse seems indeed to be justified.
