GRANBY – The elected officers of Granby have voted for a salary increase substantially on Monday evening, even if some 200 citizens have made known their displeasure at the session of the city council.
The mayor of Granby, Pascal Bonin, saw his salary rise by 15 %, from 104 160,79 $ 119 784,91 $. The councillors ‘ salary has increased by 17.5 %, from 34 202,74 $ 40 423,22 $. In comparison, the mayor of Drummondville receives a salary of 107 071 $ and the salary of the councillors, in this municipality, is 26 768 $.
Of all the elected representatives of Granby, only the adviser, Jean-Luc Nappert opposed to this increase of salary. He had proposed an increase of 5 %, rather than 17.5 %.
Mr Nappert has indicated that he will donate his pay increase to local charities.
Dissatisfied citizens
Several citizens of Granby are opposed to this wage increase. “They are on another planet! It seems that they have not looked at the average salary of the citizens of the city. It is unfortunate”, has launched a man.
“We must not forget that Granby was founded with factories and manufactures. The majority of people here work in factories. Mr. mayor, yesterday, he told us that it was necessary to compare apples with apples, and mayors with mayors, as if the comparison with the citizens was not adequate, not important enough for him,” added Ms. Deslauriers, a citizen who is entrusted to TVA News on Tuesday.
Others, however, support the decision of the board. “I’m okay with it. I’ll be honest, there are not many that come up and it’s all a business,” said a citizen.
The mayor Bonin declined interview requests from VAT on Tuesday.
