MONTREAL – The borough of Plateau-Mont-Royal has adopted, on Monday evening, a regulation prohibiting the construction of new parking lots in the rear yards of the residential buildings in the avowed aim to “reduce dependency on the automobile on its territory”.
“From now on, he will be prohibited from construction of new parking lots in the back yard on the local streets,” explained the councillor Marianne Giguère, when the borough council. The latter pointed out the measure does not touch the parking lots already existing, nor the commercial and industrial sectors of the Plateau.
According to it, 40 % of the rear yards of the district are occupied by parking lots. Barely a dozen permit applications for the landscaping of the parking lots were sent per year to the borough, she said.
The woman argued that the regulation aims to “protect our streets” and make them more safe for children, but also for the neighborhood that may be there. “We want to limit the amount of cars that pass through our alleys, which are walks of life”, summed up Ms. Giguère.
