The professor of University McGill in Montreal, which was suspected of having participated in the theft of american technology to China, was finally charged Thursday in Los Angeles by a federal grand jury.
One accuses Ishiang Shih of conspiring to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
Earlier in January, the brother of the researcher, Yi-Chi Shih, and another accomplice had been arrested by the FBI in relation to an alleged scheme to illegally obtain technology and integrated circuits military that had been exported to a chinese company.
If the technology were to be obtained and copied, it “would undermine the commercial interests of americans,” according to the american justice. It adds that these “very sensitive information” would also benefit from playing against foreigners who would like to ” develop military applications which would be detrimental to our national security “.
Analysis at McGill
The samples were sent to Chengdu, China, a company linked to the brother of the researcher in montréal. It is on the black list of the u.s. department of Commerce because of its ” involvement in the provision of materials and technologies for military end-use not authorized in China “.
According to documents consulted by The Press, the professor would have used his laboratory at McGill in order to analyze these samples of integrated circuits us that he would have received.
The FBI estimated that Ishiang Shih seems to know the laws about this technology, because he sent to his brother, indications on the military practices as well as laws that prevent its export.
The royal Canadian mounted police had raided a residence in Brossard that has the professor at the request of the FBI, in January.
