THE SAARLAND | mp pq’s François Gendron announced Saturday his retirement from political life.
The dean of the national Assembly will not seek a new mandate for the next provincial election.
Mr. Gendron should make this announcement in his riding of Abitibi-West, that it accounts for 42 years in Parliament. He will be accompanied by the chief of the Parti québécois, Jean-François Lisée.
François Gendron is the fifth member of the parti québecois to make an apron, this year. His departure adds to those of Alexandre Cloutier, Agnès Maltais, Nicole Léger and Claude Cousineau. Nicolas Marceau, for its part, announced in January that he was thinking about his political future.
François Gendron was elected for the first time in 1976, at the same time as the arrival in power of the government of René Lévesque. Old today of 73 years, he has directed the departments of the public Service, Education, and natural Resources. Under the last government of the Parti québécois, led by Pauline Marois, he was minister of Agriculture and vice-prime minister.
In addition to the pq members, four liberal members of parliament have also announced their retirement from politics after the next elections.
