BÉCANCOUR | For the second time in less than a month, the river Bécancour, out of bed, an exceptional situation in this period of the year.

“In the middle of the winter, when it’s minus 30 outside, this is the first time that it happens,” said the mayor of Bécancour, Jean-Guy Dubois.

The City has had to temporarily close the boulevard of the Danube, and this, just three days after its reopening. “It is quite unpredictable. [Tuesday] morning, we saw that there was a foot of water, so we found it more prudent to close for a safety issue,” added the mayor.

It must be said that the local residents have tasted it two weeks ago. Twenty homes were evacuated. An ice jam has pushed the level of the river 10 feet in a few hours.

In the area of Belle-Valley, it goes back quietly to the flood of mid-January. But one thing is for certain, the City of Bécancour is ready for spring, regardless of the scenario. “We are in the process of developing a communication plan to ensure that citizens are ready”, explained the mayor.

In the meantime, the boulevard of the Danube river will remain closed to traffic the time that the situation returns to normal. The citizens of the area should make the detour.
