The index of influenza activity remains high in Quebec, shows data released on Tuesday by the national Institute of public health of Quebec.

According to the most recent figures available, about two tests out of five performed for the detection of influenza were positive during the last week. Over 2500 cases of influenza have been observed in the laboratory during this period.

Because of the virus, the Institute of cardiology of the Quebec had to decide to close its fourth floor to the visitors, as 20 cases of the flu are currently raging in the hospital.

According to the ministry of Health, influenza activity remains very high, with a stable trend. The strain of influenza A circulating moderately at this time, but the strain B of the disease is very present in the province.

The flu season has hit hard this year due to the outbreak of two strains of the disease at the same time, then they usually tend to follow one after the other.

Also, preliminary data show that the flu vaccine may have been effective at 55 % to prevent the strain of the disease, but only 17 % to guard against strain B.
