After 13 years of living in shipping containers in Brownsburg-Chatham, a mother and her son suffered a setback before the court that prohibits this type of housing on the territory. The municipality may therefore precede possibly to their foreclosure.

Encountered by TVA News Sunday, Suzanne Gauthier, 79, and his son, Stéphane St-Jean, 51 years old, have received with disappointment and anger to the decision of the superior Court of Quebec. They do not intend to leave the premises.

“It is we murder, we kill, illustrates Ms. Gauthier. What is it that you want it to do ? It has no resources, nothing. All of our belongings and our life, it is here. I don’t want to live in a dwelling. Even if they gave me a housing gratisse to life, I would not even want as a neighbour.”

However, the land on which is installed the container of the goods do not belong to them. It was acquired by the municipality.

“I’m going to continue. I’m probably going to put the container on the property, said Mr. St-Jean. If they say that I am not an owner… We will do other things. But it is up to them to prove that I am not an owner!”

Mayor Catherine Trickey indicated that Brownsburg-Chatham did not get there. Accommodations are affordable and comfortable have been made to the two citizens, who have categorically refused the offers, preferring to live a secluded life in the forest.
