The health facilities that are struggling with problems of insect infestation are not at the end of their sentence. Because their presence is “quite normal”, says the entomologist Georges Brossard, the father of the Montreal insectarium.
Our bureau of investigation revealed Wednesday morning that the operating block of the Hospital of the Sacred Heart and the Charles-LeMoyne Hospital in Montreal, are infested with beetles, flies and even wasps. Mr. Brossard, who is an entomologist, maintains that there is no alarming problems.
The micro de Paul Arcand on 98.5 on Wednesday, the minister of Health, Gaétan Barrette, has admitted that the Hospital of the Sacred Heart is “probably” not an isolated case and that the lack “of budget” and the number of “problems of value”, his government should resolve to “make choices”.
“The problem Mr. Arcand, it is quite simple, it is that, I have more problems that you describe, which are real problems of wear and tear that will bring in ladybirds because there is seepage of water in Quebec, that of budgets. So, a given time, it is necessary to make choices. It is especially necessary to have, as a government, the ability to have the margin”, he argued.
“Not harmful”!
If the vice-president of the Association of microbiologists, infectious disease physicians of Quebec, Dr. Linda Lalancette, said in an interview with our bureau of investigation as the presence of insects in an operating theatre should not be tolerated as it “poses a risk”, Mr Brossard is rather of the opinion that these insects “are not harmful”.
“This is not the end of the world. They are not vectors of disease,” argues Mr. Brossard, stating that the insects are “not particularly drawn to the theatres”.
“What are halls among others! There are in the waiting rooms. It comes with full door at the hospital. It is normal that there are that walk in the theatres. All those who have access to the hospital, those are to be admitted, the visitors, excuse me, but there is no search at the door! Result: they are in the bags, they are in the bags, they are in the gifts that people bring, they are in the clothes, they are everywhere!”, he insists, adding that the insects are seeking warmth.
“It is a matter of survival! People have found a couple in the theatres! If they had searched more, they would have found even more! They are everywhere! They are anywhere where it is warm. It comes from everywhere!”, he concludes.
