OTTAWA | The difficult journey of Justin Trudeau in India has tarnished its image in the eyes of Canadians, shows a poll published on Wednesday.
According to the stroke of the probe of the firm’s Abacus, the proportion of people with an unfavorable opinion of the way in which the prime minister represents Canada to the international rose 16 % from October 2017.
This number is down from 21 % to 37% during the last five months. The proportion of favourable opinions, it has dropped from 53% to 38 % over the same period.
The percentage of the population having a positive image of Justin Trudeau has also decreased in the last few months, from 48 % to 39 % since October.
This is the second survey to be negative in a few days for the government of Justin Trudeau. A recent coup probe Ipsos on behalf of the network Global News, indicated that the conservatives devanceraient the liberals with 38 % of voting intentions, up from 33 %.
In regard to the results released on Wednesday, analyst at Abacus, Bruce Anderson, says that “up to now, little mistakes or mishaps had had an impact on the image of Justin Trudeau. There is no doubt that the reactions to his trip in India, have influenced these numbers.”
The survey was conducted from 23 February to 4 march, that is to say from the last two days of the trip. Both at home and abroad, the holiday has been heavily criticized in the media for its lack of substance, the overexposure of the family Trudeau in traditional costumes and the invitation of a former terrorist to a formal event.
The prime minister has downplayed the importance of these figures at a press conference in Toronto. “I do not really pay attention to the polls. We all know that they go up and down”, has qualified Justin Trudeau.
In the intentions of vote general according to the survey Abacus, the liberal Party of Canada does not have more than three points ahead of the conservative Party. The liberals were well ahead in the polls since the beginning of their terms, before beginning a slow decline to last fall.
If an election were held tomorrow, 36 % of respondents would vote for the liberals, compared to 33% for the conservatives. The new democrats would form the second opposition, with 18 % of the vote.
In Quebec, the study always the liberals comfortably in the lead, with 33 % of voting intentions, ahead of the conservatives (15 %) and the ndp (13 %). The Bloc québécois would make it to the fourth position with 11% of the votes.
The survey was conducted online among a little more than 4000 Canadians.
