The former grand treasurer of Union Montreal’s Bernard Trépanier is always too ill to stand trial in the scandal, Reluctantly, ruled the court, rejecting again the procedures.
“Mr. Trépanier has always said he wanted a trial, but it is obvious that he is not in a state, as noted by the court,” said defence lawyer Daniel Rock.
Trépanier, nicknamed “Mr. 3 per cent” because of the drawback that it required the value of major infrastructure work awarded by the City of Montreal, is suffering from a serious cancer. As early as 2016, a judge ordered that he undergo a trial separate from other defendants, including the former chairman of the executive committee, Frank Zampino.
But since then, his health has again deteriorated to the point that he would be unable to have all its means to defend themselves, for the time being.
He is accused of having taken part in the corruption scandal Reluctantly, where the Crown alleges that the accused have put in place a scheme to encourage Construction Frank Catania during the bidding process.
Apart from Trépanier, the other defendants will receive their verdict in may.
