GATINEAU – six months before the next provincial election, the chief electoral officer of Quebec, Pierre Reid, sounds the alarm regarding the low rate of participation of young people.

“Let us ask ourselves collectively : is it normal that young people vote so little? Me, I say no,” he said, by press release, during a stop in Ottawa.

“I am of those who believe that the day of the vote is a special day where we can express its voice. I hope to be able to communicate this interest to the young people in view of the elections of October 1, 2018″, he added.

Mr. Reid is currently doing a tour of several regions of Quebec in order to make young people aware of the importance of voting.

Young people aged 18 to 34 years will represent in October one-third of the registered voters.

The North Shore is the region of Quebec where the 18-34 year-old vote the least, followed by the Gaspésie–Île-de-la-Madeleine and Abitibi-Témiscamingue–Nord-du-Québec.
