On the surface of Mars recorded a powerful radiance
On the surface of Mars due to solar storms, there was a strong glow over the entire history of observations.
Though it is not quite “Arctic”, but turned out to be 25 times brighter than those recorded previously, reports Rus.Media.
The unusual glow was recorded by the Rover Curiosity, which is posted on the red planet since 2012.
Mars has no strong magnetic field, for which particle emissions are absorbed by its atmosphere, heats it, and forces it to expand. So there is no concentration of auroras near the polar regions,
– said Sonal Jain from the University of Colorado at boulder (USA).
The Rover also recorded during the record radiance values of the near-surface radiation for all time. These figures, according to scientists, can talk about the danger, which in the future will be exposed to the Martian colonists.
“If you were outdoors on the surface of Mars and learned that a similar outbreak will hit the planet, you would have to seek refuge, like if an astronaut was aboard the ISS during the outbreak. Such events and monitoring help us understand what will be threatened by future travelers and settlers,” – said the researcher don Hassler, member of the science team of Curiosity Rover.
We add that the photos of auroras have been obtained using ultraviolet spectrograph images on orbital spacecraft NASA’s MAVEN.
