    OTTAWA – The federal government confirmed on Friday that an agreement of $ 800 million for aboriginal victims.

    The money will be paid to the victims of the “raid” of the 60’s, were the aboriginal children removed from reserves and placed in environments that are white in order to make them lose their culture and their identity.

    The federal government was targeted since 2010 by lawsuits brought by members of First Nations from across Canada.

    This agreement covers the majority of the 18 separate lawsuits against the government.

    “The roundup of the 1960s is a dark chapter and painful history of Canada”, stressed the federal minister Carolyn Bennett in a press release.

    “For the survivors, the loss of their language and their culture, and therefore their identity, is one of the big injuries they sustained. The establishment of a foundation will take account of the needs of survivors who want to reclaim a true identity personal cultural”, added the minister of Relations of Crown-Aboriginal and Northern Affairs.
