The financial assistance paid to asylum seekers landed by thousands in Quebec in 2017, has soared to 41.6 million $ during the first 11 months of the year, more than double the past two years.

In 2015 and 2016, nearly$ 19 Million had been awarded by year benefits of last resort to households with the presence of at least one démandeur asylum, reveals a document of ministry of Labour, Employment and social Solidarity of Quebec.

The amount of 41.6 M$ could increase as the figures for the months of October and November are preliminary, without counting that the month of December is not finished.

22 775 applications

Asylum-seekers came by the thousands in Quebec in the last months, in particular by the famous rang Roxham, Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle, who has been an irregular path popular.

Up here in 2017, Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada and the border services Agency of Canada has treated Quebec 22 775 applications, according to figures published by the federal government. Only 5525 queries had been dealt with in 2016.

The Department also indicates in the document that it “has no budget specifically dedicated to asylum seekers, “and that” the financial aid that is granted is part of the overall budget of last-resort financial assistance “.

In the meantime the Commission of the immigration and refugee board of Canada issues a decision on the asylum application, the basic services are offered for temporary seekers, for humanitarian reasons. They are as well eligible for last-resort financial assistance, under certain terms and conditions.

Syrian refugees

The years 2013 and 2014 had to be more expensive in the Department for people applying for asylum, then the allocated amounts accounted for$ 35.2 Million and$ 25.8 Million, respectively.

Without giving detail, the Department explained this increase by the “international context” which may influence the number of asylum applications addressed to the federal government.
