Located a stone’s throw of the border between New Jersey and New York, the city of Leonia sees on a daily basis a tremendous amount of car travel on its territory and the local authorities have decided to act.
According to Tom Rowe, chief of police in Leonia, the situation has worsened in recent times and identifies the applications of navigation as being one of the main factors for this inconvenience. In fact, it has been stated in the New York Times that when he connects to the application Waze in the morning, it is not uncommon to find that there are 250,000 users around him.

When the major roads are completely congested, the applications of this type will redirect the drivers to a faster ride. Often, this faster ride borrows the side roads, or residential streets. It is no coincidence that citizens have difficulty leaving their driveway.
In order to counter this situation, the City has contacted the leaders of Waze, but without success. We also attempted to close some streets to traffic and to alter the signaling, but the desired effects were not obtained.
By doing this, the City of Leonia had no other choice than to resort to a more radical, in order to preserve its peace of mind. It will also establish a system of sticker which will come into effect from the 22nd January next. In fact, residents of this city have a right to a yellow sticker, which will allow them to move on the territory of the City. Non-residents are not allowed to circulate between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. and between 16 h and 21 h. The offenders will be given a ticket of US $ 200.
