ROUYN-NORANDA | The smell of spring floating in the Abitibi Thursday quickly turned into extreme cold. In 12 hours, the mercury has lost 26 degrees Celsius, which has transformed the roads into a skating rink.
In the evening on Thursday, the mercury was above 7 degrees Celsius in Rouyn-Noranda. The rain had transformed the street into a lake and the snow had melted a great deal. But the north wind got up in the evening and the mercury has lost 26 degrees in 12 hours to reach -19 degrees at 9 o’clock Friday morning. The wind chill was -29 degrees.
The water quickly froze, turning the streets into a skating rink. The cars are also fully covered in ice.
The Abitibi-Témiscamingue region is under a warning of extreme cold for the next few days.
Environment Canada predicts that a sudden cooling will hit also the south of Quebec city the next night.
