The thaw has allowed the City of Montreal to address its famous sidewalks of type “casse-gueule”. Operators of muskeg were scratched Saturday, miles of sidewalks that were like ice rinks for a week.

The City confirms that the operation will continue on Sunday since the weather wants to be still lenient.

The sidewalks of the major thoroughfares had been previously deglaciated, but those of the smaller streets were still often covered with a layer of ice, forcing pedestrians to take extra care. A problem also for the motorists, since mounds of snow have turned to ice, condemning at the same time many parking spaces.

The City reiterates that it has 6000 km of sidewalks to get a glimpse of on the island of Montreal, this represents 24 times the distance between Montreal and Quebec city. Annually, it is loading 150, 000 tons of abrasive per winter. Only with respect to the application of salt and small rocks, Montréal is investing approximately$ 30 Million per year.
