Residents of Quebec have voted to 97.7 % for a resolution to put in place a means of pressure which could lead to the general strike.

“We have no other choice than to make our voices heard and put pressure on the government with the means at our disposal, including a possible general strike, if necessary”, reported by press release Dr. Christopher Lemieux, president of the Fédération des médecins residents du Québec (FMRQ).

The main demands of the resident doctors, in addition to an increase in their remuneration, relate to, among other things, study leave and maternity leave. According to the FMRQ, the residents were required to spend approximately 70 hours per week to prepare for their certification exams.

“Our members are angry,” said Dr. Lemieux. We ask nothing better than to resume negotiations with the government, but with serious people who have real mandates and acting with respect at the bargaining table”

The Fédération des médecins résidents du Québec brings together the four associations of resident physicians related to the facilities of the university health network, Montreal, McGill, Sherbrooke and Laval. It has about 3600 members who provide services to the population within the institutions of the Quebec health. Resident doctors are fellows paid who work in the health establishments of the province to finish their medical training.
