“The UPAC uses the media when it makes its case,” says Zambito

The witness is the star of the Charbonneau commission Lino Zambito spoke with Denis Lévesque, Monday, after having announced on Sunday that he would stop collaborating with the Unité permanente anticorruption (UPAC).

Mr. Zambito, the mna Guy Ouellette and the ex-policeman Richard Despatie, are suspected by investigators of the UPAC and five police to have leaked information in the media about the investigation Machurer on the funding to the liberal party.

This is according to affidavits made public in part last Thursday and that were used to obtain search warrants on the day of the arrest of mp Ouellette, in October. Lino Zambito has worked with the UPAC in several of its investigations, mention these affidavits.

Investigators believe that Zambito is in contact with Richard Despatie, who was fired by the UPAC in the fall of 2016 and which would have had “in its possession information to investigate”.

“If I leaked information to the media, that people should come to me handcuffed to tomorrow morning”, he said to Denis Lévesque.

“I haven’t had access [to information]. The only document I have seen, this is my statement.”

A “blur”

According to Lino Zambito, “the senior management of the UPAC uses the media when it makes its case”.

“Their primary mandate is to collect information, send it to the DPCP, ensure that there are accusations and hang out in the world before the courts. They don’t have to do public relations”, he added, specifying that”there is a blur” on UPAC at this time.

“If you have nothing to hide, that one makes an independent investigation and that we go seek the truth,” said Zambito Denis Lévesque.

“When there is a corporal and the soldiers want to fight, there is a problem,” he added.
