The HMCS Calgary, a canadian frigate in movement in the strait of Georgia, which separates the mainland from the island of Vancouver, is at the origin of a spill of approximately 30 000 litres of fuel.
According to the maritime Forces Pacific, the spill type fuel 76, which is used to power diesel engines, occurred on Saturday morning. The cause of this incident has not been specified by the army and is the subject of an investigation.
During a press conference Sunday, the maritime Forces have explained that they were yet to analyze the impact of the spill. “As the situation progresses, the timing of the cleaning operation, if it is necessary, will become more clear, explained the army. It is still too early to say if there will be an impact on fish farms, or marine life, but the impact will be evaluated.”
The responsibility for cleaning it is the responsibility of the national Defence, which will receive the support of the canadian coast Guard.
The vessels operating in the sector and the general public have been advised to open the eye so as to identify any signs of contamination that could be linked to the spill.
