A commercial building of two storey building was razed to the ground by a violent fire, in the night of Sunday to Monday, on the Crémazie boulevard East in Montreal, near the corner of Foucher.

The flames started around 2: 20. The firefighters arrived, thick black smoke was pouring from the basement of the building.

Quickly, the fire spread to the first and the second floor. The commercial building is home to a nursery, which was empty at the time of the fire.

A fourplex, located to the side of the building, was evacuated as a precautionary measure.

About 120 firefighters have been mobilized to combat the fire which was eventually brought under control in the course of the morning.

The boulevard Crémazie est was expected to remain closed to traffic until the afternoon, between the streets Saint-Hubert and Lajeunesse. Police were on site to direct motorists and facilitate traffic flow in the area.

Since the cause of the blaze could not be determined by the fire department, the investigation to determine the origin has been transferred to the division of arson of the Montreal police.
