The physical activity more accessible and less expensive has brought thousands of people into the streets of Old Quebec on Saturday for the Big march organised by the Grand défi Pierre Lavoie, in collaboration with the family physicians in Quebec.
Held for a second time in Quebec city, the event being the promotion of a healthy lifestyle, is in its third edition in the scale of the province. No less than 24 cities taking part this weekend, against nine last year.
Of all the activities of the Grand challenge, it is the most ” democratic “, said Pierre Lavoie. “All the world can [a] do. The bike is good, running is good, but the walking, that is what will keep us healthy throughout our life, ” he said.
Under a radiant sun, the many walkers in the National Capital took to the start in the fountain of Tourny to cross, at their own pace, the journey of five kilometres around the parliament hill and the historic heart of the city.
Several doctors marched alongside their patients. According to Pierre Lavoie, they are more likely to prescribe physical activity. “We are witnessing a movement that is widespread. They don’t do it all at the start, but they have this concern to provide patients with an alternative to the molecule, ” he rejoiced.

For Dr. Christine Motheron, Quebecers would move more everyday because sport helps to prevent several health problems, including heart disease, anxiety disorders, obesity or even depression.
“It is a tool, the physical activity, which is very powerful and under-used, she estimated. Our body is designed to move. It is in the cities, there are cars and it is very close to the door from work or from home, and sometimes it misses a little part in physical activity. “
For his part, the ambassador of the event, Josée Lavigueur, wished that this walk gives more people the urge to take himself in hand. “People are going to do it once and will realize to what point it is pleasant and to what point it’s good for you “, she said.
